Terezin is a city located some 60 km to the north of Prague, founded by the emperor Josef II in 1784.
It was originally a military fortress with defensive walls and moats constructed to protect the city of Prague from a possible Prussian attack from the north.
Terezin concentration camp
Terezin became known during the Second World War when Nazis transformed this old fortress into a concentration camp for Jewish prisoners also known as the Terezin ghetto. About 150,000 people went through it, 35,000 of whom perished within the ghetto and 87,000 died after being deported to death camps.
These days Terezin is a small quiet village that doesn’t look like a protagonist of Holocaust and war horrors. It’s an essential visit and an important place to reflect and remember.
